What are Commons?

Commons are those resources that are collectively managed by a community according to a form of governance established by that community. The majority of web standards, open-source software, data, and open-license knowledge are commons.

What are the commons concerned with mobility?

This site on commons at the Fabrique has a list of commons that have already been identified. You’re invited to complete this list with more commons as well.

Who can access them?

The people who are involved with the resource are the ones who establish the rules for accessing it. With many digital commons (open-source software, knowledge, etc.), access may be free for all if there are no reasons for rivalry. Some rules may be put in place when the commons are dealing with more contentious resources (access to a testbed, a coworking space, etc.).

How can one use and contribute to commons?

Each common defines its rules for access, use and contribution. Most communities describe how to benefit from them and how to contribute to them. This information is available in the descriptions of the commons listed with the Fabrique.

How can one create commons?

It is first a question of identifying them, and then putting in place a system for constructing them. Resources that already exist within an organization can become commons. For example, businesses have an interest in establishing training programs as a commons, or data if one wishes to create a standard or to have that data enriched and maintained.
